[Character information]
Name: Shiala
Canon: Mass Effect
Canon Point: During Mass Effect 2, while visiting Illium to negotiate the medical treaty but before encountering Shepard again. Assumes the survival of the colonists of Zhu's Hope.
Age: 300-ish. Young, but approaching the time of life to think about settling down. For the sake of having a firm age, let's say 315.

Appearance: Though she's in many ways physically similar to a human, the most obvious difference would be the fact that her skin is green (it used to be purple). Her eyes are also green. She's completely hairless, and she has a typical asari semi-flexible cartilage-based scalp crest.
Inventory: There is nothing she would be allowed to keep, so just her clothes.
Abilities: Shiala is a highly-trained asari commando, a rank considered to be the elite of the asari military. Like all asari commandos, she's a powerful biotic, able to create and maintain mass effect fields which have a telekinetic effect: levitation of objects or herself is possible, as is the ability to throw or rip apart objects. However, since being infected by the Thorian's spores, her biotics have become unstable and unreliable. She also has the natural asari ability to attune her nervous system to that of another individual through touch, sending and receiving electrical impulses through the skin to share thoughts, memories, and feelings. This is called melding or joining, and is part of asari reproduction, but can be done without mating as well. Due to the Thorian spores in her body, she has a physical connection to the colonists of Zhu's Hope, aware of their presence at all times – which of course will be cut off when she arrives.

History: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Shiala

Personality: Shiala is a trained soldier, disciplined and serious and not afraid to use violence if necessary, preferring a combination of shotgun and powerful biotics. At the same time, she was as much disciple as bodyguard to Matriarch Benezia and spent two hundred years listening to her teachings. Benezia was a renowned religious leader with progressive ideas, and Shiala believes in this utterly. She accepts the siari faith, a pantheistic religion that believes all life in the galaxy is interconnected, and after death we are returned to the energy of all. She doesn't lack for courage; she was one of the few to volunteer to accompany Matriarch Benezia on her mission to try to turn Saren from his plan. Like many asari, she takes the long view of any situation, and is inclined towards democratic or peaceable solutions whenever possible, even if she's trained for those circumstances where it isn't. Shiala does try to do the right thing, and if she feels responsible for something she won't hesitate to try to make amends in whatever way she can. She also isn't too proud to take on tasks that might be “below” an asari commando, such as physical labour, feeling that doing what is needed is far more important than her personal pride, even if sometimes she isn't quite sure how to make the shift from being a commando to something else. She was a part of the Thorian's mind for some time, and while it's hard now for her to comprehend the memories of a sentient plant at least fifty thousand years old, it's still left its mark on her. She experiences visions and nightmares about the Thorian still, and likely always will, and they trouble her more than she's likely to admit. The experience has also deepened her awareness of her connection to others, not just the infected Zhu's Hope colonists who are now biologically linked to her, but everyone around her. She always believed that, but she feels it all the stronger now. Truthfully, she feels a certain degree of shame about the actions of the Thorian while she was part of it, even if she wasn't in control at the time, because to her, it seems like that it was herself controlling human thralls and attacking what she perceived as a threat. The situation is further complicated by the time she spent indoctrinated by the reaper Sovereign, serving Saren's plan to help the reapers return to the galaxy to harvest all higher organic life. It's only because of her time with the Thorian that she has her own will again.

She's comfortable in her sexuality, aware that most species find asari to be attractive, and will flirt openly if she feels a connection; she's not concerned with gender or species, though she's not immune from shyness if she doesn't think the feeling would be returned. Asari are a mono-gendered species that reproduce through a form of parthenogenesis (or self-cloning) triggered by melding with another individual, randomising their genetic code to reflect that of the father's. The 'father' may be any species or gender, and culturally, asari feel that mating outside their species brings more value to their race than mating with other asari. Asari have no use for gender identity in general, and Shiala is more or less unconcerned with it.

The driving force in Shiala's life is and has always been responsibility: as a commando, as one of Matriarch Benezia's disciples, and as a survivor of the Thorian. She has her share of regrets, but she tries to be a good person, and to protect those who need it. She is determined, and kind, and a little reserved without being actually timid. She's a little self-conscious about her skin colour – she used to be purple, after all.

Sample 2:

For a moment, Shiala isn't sure of anything; her mind reels and the world seems to spin. Was she mugged? Illium isn't without its seedy underbelly beneath it's surface of civility, certainly, but to be attacked in the markets seems impossible, and that's the last thing she remembers.

She runs her hands over her face as she sits up, groaning, and it takes her a moment to realise why she feels so... off. She's ceased to be aware of the colonists, the strange connection that they have with each other somehow broken. That... makes no sense. Did something happen to them? Did something happen to her? Her skin is still green, but are the effects of the Thorian's spores fading?

But there's time for that, later. For now, she has to figure out where she is, which is definitely not Illium, nor any other planet she recognises. Her hand goes to the omni-tool that should be on her wrist, but it's gone. In its place is something... far more primitive, and bulky, and probably not as useful. That... narrows her options considerably.

For a moment, Shiala just sighs, her head in her hands, and tries to think what to do.

Sample 3:

Is this... recording?

[She thinks so. Whatever this device on her wrist is, it might as well be a spear for all she knows what to do with it, but it's the only thing she has at hand that might be able to send a message. She'll try this, at least. She's calm, but frowning faintly.]

My name is Shiala, from the Zhu's Hope colony on Feros. I'm currently on an unknown planet and may require assistance, as I've been brought here against my will. My last known location was Illium. If you receive this message, please send help.

[She pauses, staring at her wrist for a moment, looking vaguely frustrated.]

Goddess, how do I turn this off?

Anything Else? I fully acknowledge that headcanon is going to be necessary to play her. I will be reasonable.
